I would like to submit a plugin for general use. A plugin to import Mark Drela's AG and ST Airfoils data from the airfoil coordinate files *.dat files at http://www.charlesriverrc.org/articles/ ... rfoils.htm Attached files airfoil_dat.zip (730 B)Â
Wow, those guys have been building for a loooong time. At the very least that is a great link with all kinds of great info.
Tried to get this running today with a .dat file, I should add I'm running wine, but it was a no-go. OOps looks like an issue with my .dat file, works great with the ones on that website!
tvcasualty, if you access the data file that you download and you see lines, except for the top line with the airfoil name, that are empty or not with coordinates, erase them and the file will work fine.
Plugin appears, and I can load a dat file, but i dont get how to make the coordinates appear in my scene. Help please!
Thanks man, no F-82 for me, if I go dual engine I've got soooo many others to build, but I admit looking at it like that sure does make me wonder now that you mention it.
I am unable to get this plugin to work and anyone help me out? I have alot of dat files of airfoils, and none of them work
try fooling with them? Delete double entries, spaces, extra things like 0000 0000 repeated. I always open a new file and then try to import the dat file, it put it in near the origin. But if your files is empty and then you attempt an import a zoom extents will find it quickly.
will this open any dat file ? I have a new drawing I go to plugins and then airfoils, then import airfoil data point box comes up then I go to where i have the airfoil file and click on the file and the box goes away and I get nothing . I tryed a number of differant dat files and nothing works, and used the zoom extents. Roger
Take a look at the dat files on the linked page. The ones you are trying to load *must* be in a similar format.
 No problem, this is a great plugin! I've gotten a lot of use out of it and it kind of spoiled me. Now if I can't find a dat file I panic! lol
Does any one have a favorite aerofoil that they use? And have tested? I have down loaded 100’s and don’t know which one to use?
Depends on what you want. I typically use a Clark Y ( flat bottom with slightly raised LE) for scale stuff. Works well and is an honest airfoil. Or for the more aerobatic stuff, a NACA 4 digit symmetrical in the 15-20% range. Gliders are a whole different story, but the trusty Clark-Y will work OK for a simple glider. Wow glad you brought this thread back. I somehow missed it when back when it was active.
