Hey guyz. Well, so much has been going on here in the Phlat Lab and most of it has been done live so we may have gotten a little relaxed with our taking pictures, videos, and posting about it. For that, we apologize. Today, the Phlatprinter made it's first foam dust!!! :D We are making great progress every day and could not be happier! Our test results are better than we even could have hoped for at this stage.

So, we are uploading some pics and video that we have taken. Like we said, we are making progress every day. It's really exciting so please, be sure to stop by the Phlatforum and watch as we move forward LIVE. We have a live Phlat Lab show every Wednesday night at 8:00 pm EST and try to turn the camera on at 5:00 most nights. The weekends, we could be on at any time. We are usually just testing and working on the Phlatprinter but it sure is fun to watch it come alive. We would love to have you be a part of it if you aren't already.

    Outstanding!
I think we'll need a "switch" added to the PhlatScript, to tell the g-code generator whether we have an MK1 or MK2 (cutter from underneath) or an MK3 (cutter from above), so the cut direction will be selectable. I think it just needs to reverse "Inside Cuts" and "Outside Cuts".

I feel so inadequate with my MK1.5 :( (Gantry envy.)

Does the photo with Tim imply you are running the MK3 with his controller card?
Oh, I remember you mentioning Mach, so that was a dumb question.

Man I'm glad you got that recorded. I was sitting at the airport earlier reading in the chat that you guys were cutting with it and was bummed I couldn't see the vid (the ustream app doesn't work right on the phone lol). In the beginning I was wondering why you were still zeroing the y on the right...err wrong side and am glad you figured it out to get it zeroed from the other side (left) so the script is working right.
    Good stuff guys!

I'm a little curious about skewing. On the star part of the vid it seemed like the foam was skewing a little left to right, but it could of been that it was sitting a little skewed from the start.

Guys we are super excited about it all! Having a lot of fun along the way
Thank you all for the kind comments.
Shaun, to answer your question. It most definitely could have skewed as the drive rollers are 'floating' in the bearings right now :) there is nothing besides the belt holding them from moving right to left and after each cut I have to push them back to their starting post!
Once that is taken care of we should be fine. I have tried as hard as I could to move the foam under the pressure rollers from the center and could not do it. This is a really good sign.
Lots more testing to be done, but we are on the way now.

Not at all. 'Z' direction is standardized, going negative cuts into the material. Thus, cutter on top or bottom does not matter to the G code, and cutter rotation direciton is stillt he same, so inside/outside is still the same.

The Y is reversed on MK1 and 2, as swafer pointed out, Z is not reversed. So the switch needs to be for Y. But if the PS is changed to cut correct for MK3, we can all just fix our Y's. Then we won't have top mirror text anymore.

Mark has been using the Phlatscript just fine the way it is with the MKIII. He figured out he just needed to zero his Y from the left side.

Holy moly the MKIII looks awesome. It's really cool to see the the belt drive acme rod drive combo on the Z axis. It's also cool to see the support of the material on both sides of the cut, I am guessing this will make even wavy foam cut at a more constant depth. Can't wait to see more details on the machine.

    Hi Mark & Trish,

Sorry if this has been asked before, but will there be an upgrade option from the mk2?

    Cheers

Bob, I think that so many portions of the design have been revised, upgraded and changed from the MK2 to the MK3, the upgrade option IS the MK3. M&T have been working so hard on releasing the MK3 that I'll bet they haven't taken the time to give much thought to a valid upgrade path.
But I'll bet some MK2 owner here will design their own MK2 mods to achieve some of the MK3 goodies! :geek:

Am I the only one who checks morning, noon, and night to see if the MKIII has been released? Sometimes I even check the main website as well as the forum, just in case you post a buy button on the site and don't announce it on the forum. haha.

Mark, I saw you mentioned attempting to release the MKIII on Trish's birthday, that must mean you're pretty darn close! I guess it's time to start organizing the mancave and making room for the MKIII. Oh yea and find a serial card for the computer in the garage and maybe another bundle of FFF. Oh no I see my checking accounting rocketing downward. I think it'll be all worth it.

I hope you gad a great Birthday, Trish!

    - Jeff

    Jeff,

These types of posts are the fuel that keep us going!!! We love the excitement and totally feed off of it. It takes A LOT of work to complete and actually produce the Phlatprinter and it's posts like this that will give us that boost to cross the finish line!

Yes, we are very close to release! Jeff, those on the waiting list will be notified first via email that production has started. We think it's only fair to give the people who have been loyally and patiently waiting to get first crack at their place on the Phlatprinter production list. We will be placing a secret link on our website available only to those who joined the waiting list and it will include the $50 discount. Sometime after this, we will make the Phlatprinter available to everyone.

Thank you for the birthday wishes. We did have a goal to begin accepting orders yesterday but we just weren't able to acheive it. We have a few things we want to work out on our end and we need to finish researching all of the parts to come up with the best price possible. Once that is done, we need to create the build log videos and order the materials. So, we are feeling good about where we stand and just have these few things to check off the list and we'll be ready to go.

    Thank you,

    Mark and Trish

Well one thing is for sure... There may be a slight wait, but with Mark and Trish it is always justified, and well worth it. They make sure it is RIGHT and all the details are worked out before they release a product.
I remember reading about plans for this on RCgroups way back (pre MKI). Then they changed it from plans to a kit. Oh no, another delay...Heck I didn't need a stinken kit, just give me the plans :)
Once I got the kit ( and it was one of the first released) I couldn't get over how well it was done from start to finish. It was well worth the wait and then some. With each release they appear to be getting better, and better. I'm sure this one will be a real winner.
