The Pond Racer is a plane that fascinates me. It was built with one purpose and that was to win the unlimited class at Reno air races. Everything about it is extreme and the design is (as most Rutan designs) quite unconventional and really beautiful.

Unfortunately it never reached it's full potential and the development of the Pond Racer ended after a fatal crash in 1993 at Reno. In the '91 Races it qualified with a speed of 400mph but couldn't start the race because of mechanical problem.

Prop-er over at RCGroups has released plans for a depron version of the Pond Racer. With Prop-er's permission I post the sketchup files and G-Code (for 6mm depron and 1.6mm bit) that I made from his plans along with pictures from the first steps of my build.

I'm going to power my Pond Racer with two Suppo 2208/12 1800kv motors. Using a 6x4 APC prop they give about 450gram (15oz) thrust each at 11A according to DrKiwi tests on RCGroups. Batteries will be 800-1000mAh 3S.

    Get the PDF-plans here: http://www.rcplans.nl
(put the plans in the cart and go to check-out then you will get a donwload link)

A video of the real PondRacer:

    A W E S O M E ! ! !

I think I'm gonna get myself a simplified profile version! (as much as I like the nice round pods, I hate sanding dust! ;-)

I have one or two SU files with these planes. Once I have my own computer again I'll install SU, go over the files and then post them here.

TigerPilot, do you have plans for a full fuse plane, or a phlatty?

Good question. The answer is: I don't remember. I have a new computer but didn't install SU yet. May take a few more days.

Update: I have now have SU and I've checked it. It's full fuse but the simple, square version. Attached files [IMG] Pond Racer.skp (832.5 KB)Â

Janbjorn... I always did like this design! I may have to get Navionflyer to cut one out for me... I have been looking for a twin motor plane and this one would fit the bill. What is the wingspan? Looks like around 48 inches or bigger to me. Retracts would be a definite addition. Did the real one have flaps? Looking at the design you could do one big battery in the fuselage and two separate ESC's or one battery in each nacelle. I think the separate battery in each nacelle would be better for the wiring lengths to keep them shorter with only having to extend the throttle control wiring only. You could do cooling vents and have a flow through cooling to cool the ESC and the battery together. Great job that your doing so far... Mudman1959

This has got to be one of the meanest looking twin motor airframes ever!! Where will the CG be?

Wow looking at that SU pic, I did not realize just how much of an angle is on the wings. I too am wondering where the cg will be for this one

Finally I had some time to work on the Pond Racer again. Unfortunately I have borrowed the intended motors to other projects, but some day I will fly the Pond Racer...
