Design a Platform Gimble for the Phlat Quake Sky Scraper

The object behind this contest is to design a stability platform gimble system to be attached to the bottom of our Phlat Sky Scraper and our Phlat Quake table. The object is to keep to see who can keep the building the most stable for the longest amount of time.

In the included SketchUp file, you will find the model of the building as well as the build area to work in. This is a maximum build area. You can go smaller than this. The idea is to create a platform system that will dampen the effects of the shaking table system.

Be creative in the way you use the foam. There are lots of ideas out there on the net for dampening systems (i.e. springs, sliding mechanisms, swinging levers, etc.) Have fun!!

Of course, there must be rulez and here they are:
    1. The design should be based on one sheet of fan fold foam (we might end up using green guard). All parts of the design must be able to fit on one sheet.
    2. Please use tab and slot construction for ease of assembly and include build instructions.
    3. The Phlat Code and Sketch Up file should be emailed to phlatboyz@phlatboyz.com.
    4. All entries must be received by 11:59 PM EST on September 6th. We will cut them out and build them on our live show on Wednesday, September 7th. If time does not permit us to complete cutting and building them all in one show, we will continue to cut and build them on the following week.
    5. The design should assume the 1/8" stock Phlatprinter bit will be used.
    6. Foam and hot glue only.

How will the winner be judged?
Judging is simple. When Phlat Kong falls from the top of the Phlat Sky Scraper, the clock stops.
Each platform will be tested 3 times each. The best time will be taken.

The platform that allows Phlat Kong to stay on top the longest wins!

The winner will be announced on our LIVE weekly Wednesday night show on September 7th (or will be pushed back if we are unable to cut and build them all in one week).

    What is the prize?
Planet-CNC's Awesome 9 axis CNC USB Board MK2!

    Hey guyz,
Here is a short video showing the Phlat Kong being drawn
Started out at 100 ipm, but slowed down to 75 to keep from skipping steps. Worked pretty good, went back and did some touch-ups where they were needed.

Ahh yes I remember it now, and I remembered I had zero ideas after many thought paths were taken. I'm getting a few more now with the phlatkong.(great idea).

Thank you Mark, That's what I needed.

You guys with 8 can just save the file as 7 in the save as file type.

I have them both on my system 7 and 8, but I am only using 8 to load 8 files and save them back to 7 so I can open them in 7 :D
I just like 7 it works good for me. So I will be able to open them either way, but if its not to much trouble for you, please save them in 7 for me. Like Shaun was saying you can click the Save as: dialog and pick 7 when you go to save your files.
    Thanks guys

Hi Guys, I've been trying to do some simulations to see how the designs affect toppling but found it difficult to simulate an earthquake...pistons, rollers, springs....oh my. I found a design online (BTM uploaded it to the Google Warehouse) but it was pretty big...7 meters square. So I modified it to 4'x4'. There are 3 platforms (each connected to pistons). The top most platform affects the Z-axis....since I don't think Mark's physical Earthquake simulator does this I set it to 0. The other 2 affect the X and Y axis. I've got it to where I think it looks about right but y'all can adjust it in the UI for Sketchyphysics. You have to download and install SKetchyphysics for this to work...:)

    http://code.google.com/p/sketchyphysics/

Please enjoy the simulations....I put the basic building with Kong and the maximum size "box" for the platform in the sim.

NOTE: This is in Sketchup ver 8....I'll need to recreate it in 7 if y'all want....You can always create the components in 7 and just simulate them in this with 8. Attached files earthquake_simulator.skp (7.5 MB)Â

Thanks for reviving that Thews. I'd been at an impasse with the plugin for a year. An hour of research found that the 'AutoCenterPoint' plugin is an issue. I 86'd that and now SKetchyphysics is working fine for me. Simpler than Solidworks for sure. I've got my entry done, now I'm bored ;)

The attached are skphy files. The first is a marble drop and roll into a lot of dominoes, few hundred I think. I had a thousand but that slows the sys down to much. btw, sk is a single core app so if your a dual core at 3ghz your good to go here.

The next is the shaker table in all its basic crude form. I left it that way to show everyone what its doing. (crank the motor speed up and set attribute as needed per your contest design)
Yea I know there are lot of prettier ways to do it, but I'm a functional type designer and I leave the fluff to the artist. Attached files physicsLearning.skp (258.4 KB)Â skphy fun3.skp (2.5 MB)Â

I was going to watch it too but that annoying ad keeps popping up every 90 seconds or so and covers about 25% of the screen so I bailed out.

Best of luck to you

p.s. We know Ustream has gotten worse with the ads lately and for this we apologize but there really is no other place we can use at the moment. You can usually close the ads by clicking on the little x in the top right corner. There is some hope that youtube will be allow its users to go live soon, looking forward to that.

Great designs everyone. They were all pretty close except for ET. He ran away with it.

Thanks for the contest Phlatboyz. Thanks for the prize CNC USB, and thanks for passing this CNC USB board along to me ET.

This will get me one step closer to owning a Phlatprinter .

    Very cool!
