    Here's an update:

    1. Attached all the servos to linkages to their respective control surface
    2. Had to make a special mount for the TV ail/elv servos on the bottom of the nacelle
    3. Test fitting the rudd TV servo to the nozzles
    4. Attached an ESky rate gyro to rudd TV servo
    5. Figured out how to make use of the telemetry module on my DX8 Monitoring flight battery voltage. This is my first and only model using telemetry
    6. Programmed all the mixes for the TV
    7. Since I am using 2 servos for elevator I had to reverse one of them
    8. Other than the TV mixes (TV slaved to Rudd, Ail, and Elv) the only other thing I'm doing with this plane is flaperon mix (in the future I may decide to install a separate pair of servos for flaps. But for right now I'm using a mix to save weight)

To be honest the full flying elevators are making me nervous. I tried to reinforce the root of the pivot as best I can without making it look bulky or weird. I'm hoping it will be enough. Also the pivot extends out the back where the TV nozzles are and I'm not sure it there will be enough clearance once I have fixed the pivot in place. There is also a lot of weight on the back of this plane but I think I have enough space up front to move the battery for proper CG. I have not weighed it again but that will be next.

Anyway back to the build! I will go into more detail on the elevator mounts, once I get some flights under them and confident they'll hold up. I've pretty much completed the bulk of this build, the rest are just niggling details like landing skids (I plan to belly land this thing), lightweight spackle sanding finishing and painting. I do believe I can maiden her the way she is right now. Here are some more pictures on my progress.

Here is the maiden! My cameraman had to launch it so I was not able to get that on video but I confirmed that I can hand-launch it.

This is REALLY coming together nicely.... A little large fora hand launch, isn't it? What's the AUW?
<edit> you were posting the video while I was posting... So it CAN hand launch :D
Looks to fly GREAT. Landing looked nice a slow. Did you have the vectors enabled during the flight? </edit>

Right now it's about 64oz but that doesn't include the paint and sealing. Yes it can hand-launch, very easily in fact due to the amount of thrust it has. I had the vectors turned on the entire flight. I did fly 2 more times performing the hand-launches myself. I tried installing a handle for hand-launches but the nacelles were too close together that I couldn't install it without compromising the cheater holes. What I didn't show was that I glassed the nacelles (3/4 oz glass cloth with water based polyurethane). This gave the nacelles ample strength to use as a place to grip for hand-launching. Also this plane has enough power that it doesn't need much of a toss to get her in the air.

Anyway I programmed 65, 85, and 100 on the dual rates with 30% expo on rudd, ail, and elev. I forgot I had D/R on and flew the entire time at 65%. Later I did a flight at 85% D/R and began to figure my favorite flight modes, i.e. 65% seems plenty for elevator but I will probably fly 100% on aileron.

    Hey Guys,

This is the paint scheme I'm going to go with. I am going to airbrush the scheme on the plane. I've made some masks to assist with the airbrushing. Here are some screen shots of what I'm made. I basically found a 3 view online and free-handed the scheme in SketchUp.

So I finally got around to sealing the foam with WBPU (water-based poly urethane) +Talc (50/50). For my Su builds I was using baby powder that was cornstarch based, no wonder it messed up my finish :x . I read on another thread that you need to use talc based powder not cornstarch based. Anyway got my paints and masks. Now to the cutting. Here are some pix with the sealant(?).

Alright, late last night I finally finished applying the masks for the red color. I was hoping that I could just simply print out the masks, cut it out, apply temporary adhesive and apply it on the plane. But because of all the contour on this plane that would not work and I had to come up with a different plan for applying the masks. So brute force method - I used the masks and a pencil to draw an outline on the plane and used Tamiya masking tape to create the mask on the plane. I then used painters tape (blue) and Frog tape (green) to mask off the larger areas. I will be applying the red color first.

OK so I finally started painting it and here are some pictures of my progress. I started using Tamiya tape for the first time, and I don't really like it as much as the Frog tape from Home Depot. Anyway I got most of the top of the plane painted I just need to paint the canopy, engine and touch up some of the over-spray. I'll start on the bottom tomorrow.

OK, so I finally got around to painting the belly of the plane and doing some detail work (i.e. engine, canopy). I have not yet decided if I want to do panel lines, I probably will once I take a small break from the plane. As of now, with the finishing (WBPU+talc, paint, light spackle) the AUW (minus battery) is 3lb 8.9oz or 56.9 oz. With a 4S 65C 3300mAh battery it puts it just under 70oz, and a little over a 1:1 thrust to weight ratio. With a 5S 65C 3300mAh battery it puts it at 73oz and A LOT over a 1:1 thrust to weight ratio (I'm guessing better than 1.3:1). Anyway, here are some pictures of the plane in its current state.

Thanks guys. I'm still working on the belly of the plane. I kept debating whether or not to do the wing graphics. I finally gave in and decided to do it. The original masks I created were too big for the wings so I had to resize it to make it fit. The tool I used for masking as not tape in this instance but frisket. I laid the frisket on top of the mask print-outs and cut out the graphic with a very sharp xacto knife. Then peel off the back of the frisket and apply to the plane <whew>. Now you understand why I was on the fence. Here are some pix of the wing art on the belly of the plane.

So the real MiG-29 demo team have 'missiles' on their plane for smoke. So I decided to add my own missiles to mimic them. The missiles I'm using are from the HobbyLobby F-18, I had them lying around from a previous plane build (Shumate Su-37). I modified the missiles so I can take them off if I wanted less drag. Here are the pix.

I started adding some panel lines and the vents/intakes (not sure what they're called) in the front of the plane. I see them in pictures of the fighting MiGs and I thought they looked cool. Anyway, this is what I did to get the effect of the intakes being open, a little airbrush trick I learned.
