My DVD stopped at the power supply installation stage and no amount of coaxing will make it play the rest of the DVD. Is the chapter 14 build log available online anywhere?
What holds the power supply on?
Where does the key board USB plug in?
    so close.... :girl_cray2:

    Hi Rowedent,
We are looking for a way to get this to you, maybe through our hosting service if they allow a 300 meg file.If they do we will email you the links needed. If they do not we will mail it to you

Guys, thanks but it wont be necessary, I finally found a DVD drive that would play the remainder of the DVD! I'm golden.

I bought a new PC while I was in the USA and just set it up with windows 8. I then loaded the free microsoft media player and tried out the disk that would not play on the other PC or the DVD player. It worked fine on the new computer.

I did discover that the extra brushes, chuck, and manual for the flex shaft grinder was missing - it got messed with in customs and I was lucky to get the grinder. For now I'm using a screwdriver and alen wrench to tighten the bit down. I'll look around in town, maybe I can find a chuck that is the right size.

Thanks for the great support, I'm sure you will be hearing more from me in the future when I get this baby fired up.

I hope to be cutting later on today!

Has anyone tried using Windows 8?

The controller board is not recognized by the CNC software.

If I plug it into my old XP laptop the hardware is recognized by the CNC software and I can jog the X,Y,Z using the software. The 'help, about' shows the hardware serial number etc,,,.

When I try with my new Windows 8 computer the hardware is not found.

    Any ideas?

    Wilson,

FYI, if you open the DVD on your computer and copy the .vob files to your hard drive, they will play on VLC media player. If you change the extension to .mpg, they will play in Windows Media Player (.vob files are actually MPEG-2 files).

Glad to hear it Rowedent
I did work on it before reading this and was able to compress it down from 300m to 70m but mn does it look bad! :D I am glad i don't have to send that
Keep up the good work and don't forget to use the settings from here:
    viewtopic.php?f=264&t=3067#p30624
These are newer then the settings that are on the disk
Congratulations to completing the build! :good:

I went through the calibration steps - things were pretty much spot on. This the problems started.

I proceeded to try to cut the table. The bit dropped into he foam and scored it instead of going above it. The next time the score was even deeper and by the time I stopped the cut the Z gantry was all the way down.
I started checking wires, belt tension, and the gantry motion - even reloading software. Nothing helped. I have been using the software to position the bit (the key pad was not acting like the one in the video). The Z gantry goes down, even if I click on the up arrow. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes down, and sometimes it wont move at all, When that happens I notice that I can easily turn the stepper motor. If I jog another axis then the Z stepper motor will get stiff again and move if I click on the positioning buttons.

I got the key pad working and can move the Z axia using the _+ keys. Using the keypad I saw that sometimes the Z moves the right way and sometimes it moves the wrong way. If I hold one of the buttons down (+ or 1 id does not matter which) the Z will move all the way to one extreme and then turn around and go all the way to the other extreme, up and down and up... all without me moving my finger off the button. It seems like when the stepper motor feels a little bit of resistance it just switches direction.

I will try the new setups file and see if that helps, but am wide open to ideas. It's 1:30 in the morning and I'm about knackered.

    Eureka!!!

I loaded up the new set up file - no joy. I then reseated all of the wires for the Z axis and that fixed the problem. I should have paid more attention when Mark said to make sure you dont screw down on the insulation (about 7 times).
Next the Y axis was acting up and missing steps. I reseated those wires and that problem went away also!
I was able to recalibrate the machine and cut out the foam table extension. My wife's not to pleased about the dust and the smell so I will have to move the operation elsewhere. Good news is my MKIII is up and cutting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all of the support,
    Wilson

FWIW, I ended up putting plugs on all 3 connections in place of the terminal block. A little more work, but I had mysterious issues creep in and then went away after re-tightening the block connectors. Haven't had one since I did this.
I use .1" header pins/sockets for this. Easy enough to plug/unplug if needed, but no chance of them loosening from the machine banging around.

That's a great idea, I have some small 2.5 mm bayonet that I use with the motors. I could try them. Now I need to go in and tighten up the timing strap for the Y axis. The vibrations have loosened it up. This break-in period is a bit of a pain - put I see light at the end of the tunnel now.
I put on the sharpie attachment and drove the pen around. It's easy to see when a step is dropped if you angle across a piece of cheap paper sided foam.

Using the dust shoe really helped reduce the dust - I should have used it from the get go (before the wife kicked me out of the house

I noticed that the Y stepper motor is quite hot. I guess this is normal.

Any recommendations for what planes to cut out? Something with ailerons and landing gear - there is no grass where we fly.

BTW... I ended up with some leftover parts.

    2x G1
    6x G2
    1 x G1

and 4long bolts and washers and 4 nuts that burrow into the wood...I didn't see anything in the build log

My current small foam favorite is 3DMons's LilRipper. "stock" no landing gear, but folks add them. GREAT flying plane and then once it's dialed in, it's even better :D
    Mine is completely stock.

Here's my mini review, and 1st flight video: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1248&start=75#p38733

    Mark,
Can you comment on what the parts I ended up having leftover are for?

    2x G1
    6x G2
    1 x G1

I too spent a lot of time trying to get the driver to work on Windows 8, including all the compatiblity settings available. The driver ought to work, most that you can get to work in Windows 7 will. I think if we can get PlanetCNC to put out the actual driver files instead of the installer we may be able to finesse them to work.

OK, I like a challange! I managed to track down the drivers in my Win7 partition. I tried to install them in Windows 8 and they wouldn't work because they aren't signed. I have been able to force them to work in Windows 8, but it isn't pretty. It requires intervention every time the computer is booted or the driver stops working. I'm going to go a little outside of my area of expertise and try to create a signed version of the driver files. If I'm successful I'll throw the drivers online along with instructions to install them.
