This is a project I started when I saw a video with this machine in it. I thought hey I can make that. So I did and it works Right now I am using a motor from one of those Christmas deer that move their heads up and down, but I think it would be nice to have it move a little faster with a different motor, so that you can see the claw action better. I used hot-glue and bamboo for the axles just blobbed a little glue on the ends to keep the parts in place. I cut this out using a 1/16" end mill and that is what the code is setup of course you could scale it up and cut it with 1/8th bit as well. Here is the file Enjoy EDIT Here is the SketchUp plugin I used to make the gears Attached files GearClaw.wmv (2.9 MB)Â GearClaw.zip (528.8 KB)Â gear3.rb (7.7 KB)Â
Oh yeah sorry about that I did find a plug in for that. Here you go. I will add it to the Other SketchUp plugins thread as well. Attached files gear3.rb (7.7 KB)Â
That gear script is cheating! I just spent a dozen hours figuring out how to draw involute curves. It's interesting that it doesn't use the tooth pitch as an input parameter. But, I guess if you are drawing gears, you probably already know what kind of things to watch out for. Dave
7up, here's a short video I made explaining how I used the script to create the gears for the claw Hope it helps Mark NOTE* You may have to right click on the video link and save it to your computer for it to work, I am having some problems with embedding these videos at the moment. Attached files gearclawtutorial.wmv (2.1 MB)Â
Hmmmm, I try the parameters you mention in the video and all I get is shown in pic 1. I try the default parameters and get what's in pic 2. I get the same results in both SU-6 and SU-7. I really like this script and have some cool ideas if I could get it to work. Anybody have any ideas? Attached files
That is weird!. Are you looking straight down or zoomed out? I have never seen that before. Maybe the file I uploaded is corrupt? Can someone else try this script out and let us know if it works for them? Thanks Mark
I am looking straight down "Top View" and I googled the script and d/l from another site and got the same results so I just stuck the the script you have posted back in my plugins. Its got me scratching my head. That is why I asked you to demonstrate. I thought I was doing something wrong...
It works fine for me. I don't see any problems creating just about any gear. It will even do a 2 tooth gear! (has an odd through hole shape though) Dave
I got my problem solved. One of my other plugins was conflicting with the gear plugin. Not sure which one I just trashed a bunch that I seldom used and that done the trick. Maybe this will help in the future when plugin trouble appears again. Removing old unused plugins also cleared up some issues I was having with the PhlatscripT. I thought it was bugs in the script but it was conflicting plugins. Knowing this I will now test all new PhlatscripT updates with a clean SU plugin folder.
"Maybe this will help in the future when plugin trouble appears again." Great tip!, I have a ton of scripts I am always testing so this might also be an issue with me. I am going to have to run a clean plug ins folder for testing the new release from now on. Thanks 7up Mark
how do you get it to load in plugins? i downloaded an loaded the unfold tool successfully earlier (whitch is totally awsome ) but i dont se the gears plugin (downloaded from two pages here. any help on what im missin'?
fantasic. love it. i wonder if your could add it to the useless machine idea. thanks for the gear plugin. can you tell me how to work out how far to place two gears. ie where do the gears touch.
Hi Cemal, Absolutely You can check out the gear claw tutorial video at about 1:16 to get and idea how I did the spacing. I really just made sure there was a little gap between the two so that it would run smooth with out being to tight or lose. I think around 1/16 to a light 1/8th inch.Really just as long as the gears are meshed you should be good. Mark and Trish
