Well, if you find yourself bored in a couple of weeks, you can always convert it to belt drive ;)

I have to say that I haven't decided completely which way to go. The speed of the belt drive is tempting, but I don't know if I want to have that at the price of reduced precision...

mark, my cutter fella at work ground up that .062 dia tool we were talking about....he can do a 1.0 cut length with no trobs...the tool looks silly long, lols...and it might be better at .625 or .750 cut length. i am doing my new acme thread screw mod, and dremel mount mod...... when i get the install completed i can test tool in 1/2in thick blue foam. btw, its a two flute ball nose.....no surprize ther ehh??, lols. love the ball nose tool's, what can i say...randy.

    Randy,
That looks cool! I agree with 7up looks mean and hungry :)
You know the bits that you sent are perfect for 3D carving(ball nose) :D
I always run into the problem of having a burr bit like the ones you sent , but I am looking for one that has a longer shaft like 3" where you could put the 1" in the chuck but have 2" of cutting flute sticking out. I could lower my dremel to make it work on the MKI but they would work fine on the MKII because of more z travel. I like the burr type bits because they seem to make a nice clean cut.
Are your guys capable of making the burr style bits?
Really nice looking Randy thanks for posting

mark, i really dont think so, but i will ask him. the roto-zip tool is a grinding type tool. we buy them tools at work. he probally can grind a hogger type tool thou. 1in in the chuck with 2in hangin out sounds like whipper snappin fun, lmao. i will check it out. heck maybe i will come to toledo with a suitcase of tools and set-up with ya at your booth, lmao. randy.

    grind a hogger type tool
Do you have pic of that one?

The main reason for wanting this style is that it make such a nice cut over all the others we have tried. and when you add the ball nose then your really talking :)
A 2" cutting/grinding flute would be tops with the 1" shaft to fit in the chuck. That way you would not have to worry about cutting depth on thick material

lol that would be cool! you wont need to because you know I want them all!

ok fellas, i wanna start by saying the phlatprinter belt mod is awesome.....i just decited to stay with a acme lead screw set-up. i probally have 80 bucks in the new set-up. i have tested it up to 350ipm so far....no troubles. i know its not as fast as the belt mod, but its pretty darn fast from one end to the other. also i nose mounted the dremel along with mark's original set-up. man its real solid. all the machining was done monkey ghetto style with hand tools. the end for the dremel was a old grout removal tool i never used. wacked off a 1/2in like trish with the hacksaw....made a holder outta delrin stock, screwed and epoxied to my stand off i need to center tool in slot. anyone wanting to stay with a acme screw the 3/8-8 four start fits the bill.....also before i figured out i burned out a chip, i bought a 260in stepper for 40 bucks. you will need that if your gonna do the mod. peace, randy.
used old grout tool, hacked off end to screw on threads...

    Great work man!
Why would you need to go any faster than 350ipm anyhow lol.

ok fellas, made my first test cuts on my phlatty....man i have to report im very happy. if you need to cut faster, you will have to go with mark and eric's mk 1.5 belt mod. my stepper stalls the drive at 400ipm....around 375ipm it seems solid. i set-up the y-axis to 300ipm. i forgot to kick up the x-axis, it was set at 200ipm.the performance is fine with me. hmmm, do i smell a 3/8-8 four start acme lead screw mod coming for the z-axis??. lmao. got a piece of acme screw left over to do it.......all i gotta do is get another 40dollar stepper, and a paypal to tim over at dumpster. damn mark, this phlatprinter keeps me thinkin, lmao. we need some phlatcode with v-tabbin, true arc cutting, pocket clearing, and exact z-axis depth control. man i aint askin alot bro, lols. as usual any other mods i will report back, peace, randy.

ok fellas, this is not a mod as much its a calibration tip......the old ghetto monkey stumbled on a good way to qualify the x-axis main drive roller. first i qualified a 12in scale.....it checked 12.006 then i used it to calibrate the x-axis with my ghetto older than old dial indicator....it took me about 25 times to get and confirm the calibration. luckey i was not on video, as i stood ther with my mouth hangin open in disbelief as how well the axis repeated... it was like only +-.001 it was unreal to see that.....my calibration settings for the x-axis are as follows......

    board stepping settings+1/4 steps
    feed rate=300ipm
    acceleration=18
calibration value for the x-axis= 517.0794217

i used mark's stock parts for all the x-axis components......randy.

    ghetto measuring tools...
setting up the ghetto calibration dial indicator
    [IMG]
    ready for x-axis calibration test...
after about 20 times, i was totally amazed on how well the axis repeated..+-.001 everytime

Randy this is great news! I have been trying to figure out a way to test the x axis accuracy
Thank you so much for setting this up and reporting it to us all.
Great video and superb build on the Y axis! You are doing some incredible things with the Phlatprinter and we are grateful to you for all your efforts :)
Thanks again so much and keep up the good work

decited to work over the z-axis. i had enough of the acme screw to do so.....had to get out the serious ghetto modding tools....the old flame thrower, lmao...had some 1/4 bushings to remove, so i could install the 3/8 screw. jb-weld or epoxy don't stand a chance in hell with this technique. lols. i tested the rapid up to 200ipm it was kinda hard to control, so i backed it down to 150ipm. seemed more easily managed.....mark, is ther a feed limit in phlatcode for the z-axis? if so whats the fastest rapid?. randy.
gettin serious with the bunson burner, lols...

Beautifull work. I am envious of your machine. I ordered Eric's Y axis mod but the Z could certainly use some help.

ok fellas, after messin with my z-axis, i found out i had the stepping on the wrong value for the calibration value....ya really wonder why i call myself a idiot monkey??, lmao. ok, after i got things straitend out, i made a z-axis tabbing test program. i dont know why but mach 3 would not let me set velocity over 468. if anyone knows about a setting or something please let me know. i think this axis can go alot faster on the plunge.....it will put them ball nose tools to the test....here is a video of my axis testing. the test was run on 1/8 stepping, im thinkin about testing with 1/2 and 1/4 stepping....also does anyone know what kernel speed i can set with a 2.4 quad core cpu??.thanks for any input....randy.

in video my monkey butt says 468imp, its 468 velocity setting.....

ok, fellas, now im starting to get someweres....set the control board up for 1/2 stepping....now the z-axis looks alive...and hopping to it...this mornin when i took the blow torch to the gantry, i was wondering "man i hope the mod is worth it" well i am pretty pleased with the performance of the axis. now the z axis will keep up with the other ones. now i gotta wait on tim over at dumpster cnc to send the stuff i stolen from the y-axis, lmao. he is fast thou, prolly get mon or tues. anyone want ther stuff quick, i gotta say he's the man.....now im startin to get the hang of the motor tweakin, i cant wait til i get back to that slow 300ipm y-axis, lols......i got a video uploadin, i will post when its done. randy.
