Well here it is boyz! The radial engine design! :D
I have to say that this build is a lot of work and is for the experienced builder that does not frustrate easily :)

The whole engine was made from 3mm foam with glue sticks as the axle shafts.
The cylinders are tight so be sure to sand them and test slide them so that they are lose.
Feel free to improve on the design as seen fit and please post pictures for your builds should you take this project on.

Hey guys while we were in Toledo we met a guy (David) that asked if he could take a closer look at the foam Radial engine. I said sure :) and he pulled out what I thought was a camera to take a few pics, as it turned out he was actually holding a thermal imager! and he was seeing where the heat build up was as the motor turned! I said you have to send some pics of that please.. and he just email them to us today.. Here they are. It also has the ability to take video. Dorsal and I were there when he was showing what it looked like and its just amazing! You can see around the pivots of the armature's there is the max heat and then the build up in each cylinder just like a real engine :D
    Thank you Dave!

What Mark forgot to mention was that he had connected a small, slow electric motor to the crankshaft of the foam radial model and it was in the back of the booth, slowly rotating. Mark didn't like the sound of it, because one or two pistons kinda growled when they were pushing up, but it sounded like an old radial-engined plane flying humpty-bumps. You know - brrrrrrppppp (up the hump) then silence (down the bump), over and over.
That is so cool Mark! Because of the angle, I couldn't see the images very well on his hand-held, but you can easily see the cooling fins on the model because they are cooler than the rest of the image. Imagine that!

 You know Dennis I forgot as well to post some video of the engine moving.. I have been looking through some of the old video and could not find any. I will have to take some here in the Phlatlab and post it.

Thank you Mark, this is awesome, I really need to get a 101 on the slicer tool :)

    Thank John :)
The slicer plugin is pretty straight forward to learn, you have to know that there are two versions of it one slices in only on one axis and the other slices along two axis and adds intersecting slots. Check them both out under the must have plugins in the SketchUp section of the forum.
To let you know this radial engine model was not created with the slicer plugin though. It was from pictures of radial engines.

Thanks Mark, after having a closer look at it I see you didnt use a slicer!! That must have been pain staking to produce such a code :D We all appreciate you sharing all this hard labor!! Thank you Brother!! :)

Thanks John, it was a lot of work but I have to say with this design its not to bad because once you get one of the cylinders complete you can copy them around the engine :)
So really its just a matter of building the main section and then one cylinder and then your done.
The hard part was making sure that every thing aligned just right so that the pistons would not bind. There is no margin for error there and you must make sure you start out with that perfect or there no sense moving forward with a design like this. Once you get that you are good to go! :D

Hello fellow modelers. Want to get into Giant Scale Warbirds. For my first GS build I want to build either of the following in order 1) Corsair (2) P-47 (3) P-40 (4) Spitfire

I am going for the ultimate build. I want a radial engine ( preferably gas ), folding wings (Corsair), operating canopy, retracts, lights, bombs, smoke....THE WORKS!!!!

With that in mind what's the biggest radial engine that will fit in a Top Flite GS warbird?? Are there other makers kits that would be a better fit?? Any suggestions are appreciated!!

That's extremely cool! The thermal images are really great to see.

I've done some lost foam casting in aluminum in the past. I'm thinking about going from foam to metal. This summer I also built an iron furnace, and have cast iron as well, though not using lost foam.

Anyway, thinking about combining some of these things.
