Tonight on our LIVE Show, we announced a contest. We have asked that you all put your design skillz to good use by applying them to the Phlatprinter's cooling fan guard that is built right into the size of the Phlatprinter. We have created one model but aren't really happy with it.

We would prefer that it fits in with the Phlatprinter design but doesn't actually say Phlatprinter or the number 3. We are looking for a family friendly, cool, unique design.

We are using a square 80mm standard computer cooling fan. We will be using an 1/8" bit.

    The Rulez
    - Post as many design ideas as you would like.
    - We will either pick the winner or start a poll.
    - By entering the contest, you allow Phlatboyz, LLC to use this design without any compensation other than The Prize and bragging rights.
All entries must be posted here in this thread no later than 3:00 pm EST on Wednesday September 8, 2010
    - We reserve the right to modify the winning design.

    The Prize

A Phlatboyz Prize Pack which contains a Phlatboyz T-Shirt, a Phlatboyz Key Chain, a Phlatboyz Mouse Pad, a Micro PhlatStang and a Micro Flying Surfer Dude.

Here is a picture of the one we came up with (for inspiration) :D

Here are the template file for the fan and the guard we came up with to get you going, if you have any questions post away :) Have fun with it and thank you all for your help :D

    Here is the SketchUp Model

We have some of these Dorsal :) they are cheap enough but really want the design to be part of the machine this time.
    Thanks

Here's a simple tutorial that will help with sketchup arrays

His way will work but you can also type Xa number for the amount of blades you want for instance x8 will give you eight blades spaced to the amount that you move the first blade
    Hope this helps
    Mark and Trish

Trish/Mark, you guys want the SU file file only? I imagine it will be imported into your door layout?

Or do you need the gcode also for test cutting?

    Hi Shaun
No gcode needed, your right we will have to convert it to a dxf and work it into the door design.
    Thanks

Okay, so here's a few entries I thunk up. Please keep in mind that I do not have a creative neuron in my head, but I thought this would be a fun project to play with. I am kind of ashamed to post these, but I figured that someone should get the ball rolling on this project. :D

    From left to right...

The first one is my attempt at a simple 'branding' to associate the cut out with the PhlatBoyz.

The second and third ones are supposed to make you think of a propeller spinning. I had an idea of attaching a small colored spinner to the center to that it would complete the effect and maybe even offer a kind of handle for pulling the access door open.

Anyway, I won't bother with posting my SU files since I know you guys will come up with something to blow this rudimentary stuff away.

I am looking forward to seeing what all you guyz come up with! Attached files [IMG]

Crash, I think those are pretty cool. In fact I designed one almost exactly like your third one.

    Here are a couple...

Mark, I figured you'd already found a source for inexpensive metal fan covers, but I remember a kid in Junior High School who took off the end of his finger with the blades of the fan on a jig-saw motor. Very messy!
If you were seriously considering a nice design that might allow some 4-or-5-year-old's fingertip to get through, covering the design with a nasty-ol' metal guard might still be necessary.

Dennis, im sure that was a very bad thing to witness....but any of the pc fans i have ever monkeyed with, are not powerful enough to hurt, ther rather wimpy.... any kids around the phlatty better keep the hands outta the way of the flesh eatin carbide burr cutters. and if not, they will only mess with it once ill bet, lols.

Randy, they're not powerful enough to hurt you or me, because we're tough old birds with calloused fingers. Youngsters have tender, thinner skin and they tend to SCREAM a lot when they get hurt. This design will expose the intake side of the fan to the outside of the PP, so the wimpy guillotine is traveling in the most hurtful direction.
    I'm just sayin' - - - - - -

Keep them coming in guys they are looking great!
One thing to keep in mind that I forgot to mention is you can also have your center line cuts go all the way through instead of or in combination with recessed lines so in other words you could have smaller holes @ 1/8th for a lot of the design.
    Great looking designs boyz!
    Thank you
    Mark and Trish

Y'know, you could use any of these designs as a handle, if the wire fan guard were mounted between the door and the designed cover. Just run a 3/32"-deep undercut pattern to allow for the wire to be trapped between the door and the cover, and Voila!
I sure wish I had an artistic bone in my body.

This is my idea for the fan cover. I am very new to sketchup so bear with me, thanks. It incorporates your P for Phlatprinter and also kinda looks like a propeller spinning. The curved lines I thought make it look like you are looking a the front of a airplane with the cowling.
Good job everyone, they all look great so far.

I see, that's where quoting comes in handy. :D

You're still welcome to one of my Prozacs, though, I have plenty to keep my half way sociable! ;) :D
