Well, finally! I have reached the point with my workshop that I can actually start on my 4X4. I spent nearly the entire weekend hauling 3 partially-used gallons of paint, paint rollers and brushes and pans, 5 ladders, hammer drills, 50-foot extension cords, unused scraps of lumber - in other words a whole lot of "stuff" out of the workshop and back to the garage (where they belong). I can now see the top of the HF oak workbenches that will sit atop the 4'X5' (4"X 4") 8020 leveling caster frame that actually rolls on the floor. I posted a video a couple weeks ago of the workshop here: (before I installed the roof over the door, the oak threshold, the door trim and seals, all that stuff.

(A quick glimpse of the buried 4X4 base is at about 3:00 in the video.)

Hopefully I'll get out there in the daylight to take a couple photos, but I have arranged the first four 1515 X 48" base-pieces and temporarily attached them to the 5010 outer rails with screws. Mating metric rails to an Imperial bed will be a little bit of a problem, but I think I've got it figured out.

In other words - I'm finally started! Wahooo!

(I'll be posting most of my progress photos, etc., over at Joe's, unless anyone here is interested. double-posting is a real pain.)

    Dennis,

Just link it here when you update at Joe's rather than double posting.

Way to go Dennis! Looking good brother :) It has to be a good feeling to know you have that part complete before winter sets in.
    Keep up the good work

Tim, Joe's Forum is only open to the owners of Joe's drawings, so linking to there would be useless.

Since you can't link; and not to create too much extra work for you, but I personally would be interested in just a few highlight photos..

    THANKS

    Here are some progress photos:
Two HarborFreight Oak workbenches separated by ~20", 1515 extrusion to span them, Rockler clamp rails, lotsa bolts. Hey! There's my coffee cup!
5010 sits atop the 1515 with Alum. ells screwed down and Y-gantry clamped together. V-bearings are riding on the steel angles.
I'll need to trim about an inch off the bottom of the gantry to clear the workbench drawers. These are the pre-R&P gantries, so they need to be modified anyway.
The screws I have are 5/8" so I need a thick washer under the head. I ground a flat to miss the corner fillet.
Imperial slots are 3/4" up, metric slots are 1/2" up, hence the hole stretching.
1/2" counterbore with a 1/4" pilot, run it down slowly until there is full contact.
Fuzzy photo, but the angles and rails got "smurfitized".

Dennis just so you know, this area is going to be removed soon. Trish and I made a decision to close this area down and announced a few weeks ago that we are going to focus on the Phlatboyz machines. Now for some good news, we do have something in the works that we think you(all) will like, and plan to announce it very soon. So keep taking pics of your build :D
Sorry about this if you missed the show and did not realize. Thank you for being understanding.

I'll definitely keep taking pictures of my build, but apparently I won't be posting them here. That's fine because keeping both Joe's Forum and the PhlatForum updated, answered, corrected, etc. was going to be a hassle, so my extra-curriculars just got cut in half! Thanks!
