Hey guys I never posted pics of the fat plane I did from the paper craft file so I will post it now. I am working with a guy from rcgroups (SkylineR32) who designs the real models of these planes for video games Sims and the like. He told me he would send me some of his other works to try out So I will give them a try, it should be fun! If we can get them to fly it would be incredible, and they would look so cool in the air.. I will post more of the tiral an errors here with the builds Mark Attached files
Wow Mark, that's a blast from the past! I didn't know you'd done a Fatty Jet. They will fly Attached files
Mark, They're kits available from Japan. I saw them a couple of years ago, but they were a bit too expensive to import at the time. The company that makes them is called A-Crew : http://www.gcpcorp.jp/a-crew/ Video of the F16 : The A-Crew versions are EDF's, but EPP-Craft (also in Japan) have been kitting a lightweight indoor version that uses a 10g motor with a pusher prop : I think i've got some more info on my PC at home, but it's been a long time since I researched these so it might take me a while to find it. BTW, if you know of any good tutorial videos for Pepakura then let me know. I tried it ages ago and couldn't figure it out. Si.
Thanks for the videos and link Si I have been looking for these all over. I think I may have found the guy who designed the actual 3D Models! . He is sharing them with me in hopes that we can get one flying! So I will be working on these a little in the background to try to get them ready to go. He sent me about 5 of the models to get started but he has many more. I imported them into Sketchup and tried to smooth the normals a little. Its still going to be a lot of work to get these unfolded and ready to go, but I love this challenge and it will be well worth it to have these toon planes flying around I will post them in the free plans with his permissions when they are ready to go! Here are some pics Mark Attached files
Glad the info was useful Mark. I posted about these on RCG a couple of years ago and no-one showed much interest. I like models that are slightly obsucure . Those 3D models from Skyline looks awsome! They've definately got potential for making RC versions. I don't know how much you looked at Pepakura : http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/ but it 'auto-unfolds' 3D models and is the main software used by card-modellers. I'll have to have another look at the software and see if we can use it with Sketchup. Si.
Si i did buy that software and have used it before on a few models it works great once you know how to assign the fold lines where you want them. The auto unfold is cool, but it never seems to fold it where you want it too I email the creators to ask them if they would try to incorporate material thickness allowance for bend radius and they said they would look in to it. If they could solve this I think it would really be nice! We shall see what happens with future releases. Mark
Soon as I can free up a little time here with the shop( getting close now) I will be back on track with these We are almost finished with the final sides Drywall and then its just a matter of tapping and sanding. We are shooting for the end of this week, maybe by the weekend! Mark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of Tums! Great models Mark. I can't wait to see how they progress. I gotta send you more meshes. Oh God I wish I could afford one of your Mk1s. I'll be doing conventional built up models. Formers and stringers. Pink insulation foam wings.
Hey Mark - for sanding the drywall, use a damp block-type sponge, or a damp rag wrapped on a sanding block. There is no dust, the water re-floats the surface and it comes out s m o o t h !! Just move quiclky over the un-covered areas of drywall.
Skyline, Good to see you here! Welcome to the Phlatforum. Guys this is Skyline the creator of these cool models we are working up for the Phlatprinter. Great guy for sharing his models and talents with us here. Thank you Dorsal, Thank you for the tip on drywalling this way. We are finished now so that is cool! I tried to get my Dad to work it that way but he really wanted to do it the way he knows 3 coats and 3 sandings. Its a lot of work but it comes out really nice I must say, after all he raised 7 kids doing this for over 20 years. To watch him tape is like watching an artist paint a masterpiece! Its simply amazing and I my finish does not even come close Mark
Here's another fat baby plane by a new guy ey0927399 on RCgroups. Here is his thread http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1144798 Here is his Blog http://blog.yam.com/rcflying lots of fat planes to look at. Check out the zero! Looks cool. There seem to missing some parts but I will try it when I get some 3mm depron to work with. Have fun Attached files Q737.skp (687.6 KB)Â
I think he was using 3mm for this one if I am not mistaken. Maybe with the paper off that board would work? Mark
The dollar tree board with the paper off is 3/16 thick so it's a tad over 4 mm, but it bends really well. I am having problems getting cut paths with all the deep v cuts, still working it out
Is there a trick to getting the paper off that foam board? I have used it for a few of the wife's projects and tried peeling the paper off one time. The pieces came off in tiny chunks and I finally gave up after a few minutes messing with it.
Ah yes, when you go to Dollar tree, get a $1 bottle of Awesome carpet spot and stain remover, it's in a red bottle, spray one side and within 2 minutes the entire paper will come right off. Turn it over and repeat. DO NOT let it dry or the glue will re take and you have a mess. If I had a video camera I would make a video of it and post it.
Third picture is the stuff I use Second is the foamboard wet First is 30 seconds after spraying the board. Attached files
I'm gonna guess "That Dollar Tree" is an American dollar store? My local dollar store has some foam board with paper laminates. I think I'll try your suggestions, but I'm wondering about the warps. If I use this for wings, how do I get the warps out? Cut slots and insert balsa/spruce spars for rigidity?
Once you peel the paper off the foam lays nice and flat, what you are seeing is the paper warping the board when you wet it. You will need some spars, I use carbon fiber for mine
Finally got the chance to do a quick test cut of the 737 I taped it together for a quick test fit. I am going to rework this file for ease of assembly and to add better formers and windows/small details as well. Mark Attached files
