Here are a few pics of a saucer built using foam and balsa. All cut with the PhlatPrinter. I like the added stiffness the balsa ribs give.

    LaVerne, that looks very nice!
How do you keep visual orientation though?

Thanks Dennis. The bottom has silver covering where the top has black. Plus, the bottom outer edge is silver. It does help some. At 24" in diameter, I don't let it get too far out there.

Super sexy plane. I've been thinking a lot about balsa foam hybrid builds lately too, but it is great to see someone who has worked it out all ready.

And the covering looks beautiful. What covering are you using on the foam? I've used econokote before but it is heavier. Was thinking Coverite branded covering might be low temp enough but it would be a constant concern about deforming the surfaces.

    Either way, EXCELLENT WORK!

Thanks for the comments!! The saucers have been getting the attention of the local RC group and have received several orders from them. Kits would be a nice idea. Although, I think having to cover it could be an issue for some. I like the way foam glues to balsa. It seems to work better than foam to foam. The covering is from Tower Hobbies and is called 21st Century Coverite Microlite Covering. I've tried several light films and it is by far the best/easiest to work with.
