What do you gain when adjusting the steps from Full to something less than that?

Do I get more torque at full steps (200 per revolution) or 1/8 (1600 per revolution)?

Do I gain or lose accuracy with this adjustment?

Is there a coloration between steps, speed, torque, and accuracy when making this adjustment?

I've looked on the Internet but have yet to find useful info.....

I'm trying to find a way to make the Z-Axis work better with the stock components I currently have until I can replace the 90oz stepper motor with a 208oz, ZBN and such.

In the link post 5 he discussed 2 micro-step vs. 1/2 step.....frick.....I don't know what that means....

Man.....I feel like a fish out of water on this topic..... :(

Maybe this post is more directly tuned to your question. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13678
btw, cnczone.com is a great source of CNC related info. sign up.
Oh, setting the stepping switches to anything other than "full-step" is called microstepping. Mine are all set at 1/8, but I played with 1/4 and 1/2 settings and saw no difference in performance with my machine. Maybe it just hates me.

btw, since I pulled my 3/8-12 Acme screw off of my Y axis, it's just laying around (with my homemade ZBN). My Z is still running on the 3/8-12 single-start Acme thread, at 19233.31209, 35, 6. I was thinking of cutting it into Z-length sections and selling them with a ZBN. Do you think anyone would be interested?

Thewz, I hope you aren't going to go to all that trouble and still keep the all thread. All thread is designed to hold tight, not for drive screws. Just keep the stock motor and go with acme thread. I got plenty of the stuff, too.

By the way, Randy (rjarois) seems to be using 1/2 step. Maybe he will chime in or you can pm him to see why?

Randy is using a 4-start thread, which would imply I/we could go to a full-step setup, eh?

I changed to 1/2 step and re-calibrated the Z-Axis....I still have to set it to 13IPM or I get missed steps.....frick

I am very interested in some ACME thread and a ZBN if anyone has a supply....I'm going to have a party when that last freaking piece of all-thread is gone!

Shoot me a PM and "let's make a deal"... :D

Be gentle.......I don't have a lot of cash.....

I don't know how far you want to go, if 35ipm is enough. But you might want to get into the following discussion, if you want speed like randy is getting with 4 start acme thread. Then you do need the bigger stepper:

25 to 35IPM will work just fine for my needs.

Hey, what's the length of the Z-shaft supposed to be? Mark's video says 6 3/4" - Does that seem correct to you'se guys?
I really don't feel like dismantling mine just to measure the darned thing.
(and no more Bobbit jokes, please)

Well, it looks like I can cut this rod into only 3 usable pieces, and Thewz just got the first one, with my coupler and (barely) used ZBN.
Shall I cut the other two Z-rods to length from it, also? ;)

Might as well....I'm sure you'll find someone else here that needs to replace the Z-Gantry all thread.
