A new spin on the perceptions, procedures, and principles of flight.

For those of you who don't know this already, you MUST check out the amazing on-line book "See How It Flies, A new spin on the perceptions, procedures, and principles of flight". The book is a gentle introduction to the physics of flight, aerodynamics, airplane design, and many other things. It was written with the private pilot in mind, but the content is relevant to anyone with an interest in flying contraptions, miniature or otherwise.

If you ever wondered why and how an airfoil, or a flat barn door, can generate lift, this book will explain it to you (many other books get this wrong!).

I really like it because it puts the information in to an easy to understand format :)

I looked it up. Man, there is a lot to read. I don't have the patience to go through it all. All I wanted to see is how he explains why the plane stays in the air, how the lift is made. I know how it is done, I just wanted to see his spin on it. I know it is not the 'suction' that is created on top of the wing because the air, alledegdlly, is moving faster above the wing than bellow the wing.

That seems to be a life long argument :) Some believe it does and others believe it does not. :D Either way it it works thank God or we would be not be able to fly!

The short answer is that the law of physics are the same in gas, fluid and solid. A plane flies for the same reason that a water skier can ski on the surface of the water, even barefoot. Nobody is going to say that it is the suction that keeps him up.

BTW, suction will not explain ground effect, what I said above will.
