Flash, back from the dark ages, would like to know the best way to process these files.

I am leaning toward Vectric 3Dcut, but maybe someone has used something better, less expensive, or has opinions one way or another on good software to process them.

Also, would be great if someone with some prior experience in making canopies, molds, etc in Sketchup, could make some tutorial videos.

I haven't ventured too far out from the 2D world yet, but am thinking I may need to in order to make use of the Phlatformer I just purchased.

This would be a good subject for another thread, but seeing as we were discussing STL files, I thought this might be a good time to bring it up.

Meshcam works great with .stl files.

Thanks for all the .stl files David.

This would be a great tutorial Flash. When I get some free time I will put one together, but it may be a little while :)

I've added feature that allows you to display SLT files into PlanetCNC software. Now you can use it to view SLT files. Just open or drag&drop file with .slt extension and it should be displayed. This is available in latest beta (20101208) and later versions.

Is it possible to get other SLT files?

ummm, Did you mean STL files? I downloaded the beta and opened a couple STL files and they did not show anything.

Does the new feature let you cut the STL files?

EDIT - It does work! Took awhile to appear. Cool!

EDIT Again.... maybe not... the old version I was using opened one, but the new Beta does not seem to be working. Got to do some more tests.

EDIT - My bad, that was cnc file that worked. I still can't get an STL file to open.

I think I read that you can change the extension from .stl to .txt and open it in a standard editor.

By that, I meant that the STL files do not display in the software...

File is displayed in center of display with 1:1 ratio. It must have .stl extension. It can be very small. I had this feature in development version but I decided to release it. It is not very useful for anything except displaying STL files.

This is part of my 3D surface library. I was working in 3D toolpath generation and other complex 3D math stuff. (Does anybody have robust algorithm for calculating points on surface(mesh from STL) and plane intersection?)

STL files come in binary and in ASCII format. I've only implemented binary format. I've never seen any SLT file in ACSII format anyway. Attached files [IMG] [IMG]

Kroko, this is an AMAZING feature that you added to the Planet-CNC software! The way you are making improvements, I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next! You have provided (hardware AND software) exactly what the hobby CNC-ists have been waiting for, and I know that I speak for the rest of the gang here when I say that it is truly an honor to have you here!

    Keep up the great work!!

ummm... I tried opening a couple of STL files exported from Sketchup and they don't display anywhere that I can see.

I am attaching one here.... maybe its my graphic card. Can you check it?

ChristmasMail.stl is in ASCII format, sometimes called STLA. As I said, this format is not supported and is rarely used because files are too big.
I'll add support for ASCII when I'll find some time.

Ah okay, that explains it then. That is what was exported from Sketchup and I had no idea what format it was in.
