Even with all the stories about the Titanic, a new one has come out. Apparently due to a problem getting coal, the White Star line transferred coal over to the Titanic before it set sail on heading to New York. As a result the dust started a fire in one of the coal bunkers. The crew knew about the fire and worked to put if out, but probably never succeeded. The heat from the fire would have heated the steel bunker walls and the exterior of the ship, heating which weakens steel. They think that the ice berg hit near that very bunker, which in its weakened condition, would have ripped the largest gash in the ships side.

You may or may not have heard of the Olympic, Titanic's sister ship. Apparently they could hear the distress calls, but were too far away to offer aid. Taken over by the navy in WW1, she sank a German U boat, the only merchant ship to do so. After being sold for scrap, portions of the ship were removed and auctioned off.

Since the two ships were almost identical, if you want to see, sort of, what the interior of the Titanic was like. Go to the White Swan Hotel in England.
