I just completed my build (#51) and have tried to calibrate prior to a first cut. X and Y are right on with the settings file that came with the support disc, but the Z axis is pretty far off. I believe the settings file had the Z axis at around 700 steps/unit, but I had to lower it to 405 to get the Z axis to calibrate. Any one have any suggestions as to the cause?

Also, where should the cutting bit be positioned when zeroing the Z axis? Should be just touching the top surface of the material to be cut?

    Thanks!

700 is too high. If your able to get 400 without losing steps then that is really good. I can't get my z to go past 300.

As for zeroing the bit. Yes right on the top of the surface.

    Have fun cutting!

Make sure your pulleys are like those shown in the video. I reversed mine as I had slight binding. I get more torque at the expense of speed. I had to modify my settings as a result. I forget the exact values, but can look them up for you if you want.
